The Third Annual Bowl Blowout Bonanza!
Friends, we’re back for the third annual Bowl Blowout Bonanza! In years past I’ve given you all the bowl games at once, but I’m switching that up a bit this year. There’s too much that goes on between now and some of the New Years Day games for me to accurately give out picks; so there will be a part one, part two and part three this year! We’ll also be picking all of these games on the Deep Fried Bets Podcast so be sure to check that out if you aren’t already! I assume we’ll keep these picks on the same schedule as the Podcast.
Alright, now that we’ve got that housekeeping out of the way let’s have some fun! It’s the greatest time of year my friends, it’s bowl season! I have to be honest, in the past I haven’t been the best at picking bowls but that's the past damnit! I can honestly say I’ve put more time and effort into the College Football season this year than ever before and I’m ready for the challenge, and we’re going to make a lot of money. Like Star Wars money. That’s right folks, Deep Fried Bets is prepared to make you Star Wars money this Bowl season!
So without further adieu let’s get to it! All lines for the first set of games are as of 11am central on Friday December 16, 2016.
Gildan New Mexico Bowl: New Mexico (-7.5) vs. Texas San Antonio
Saturday December 17th 1pm central
Your favorite shirt now sponsors your least favorite bowl game! Regardless of how you feel about this game, I see a big time money making opportunity here. If you’ve paid attention to the Deep Fried Bets Podcasts this year (seriously, go check those out they’re great) you’ll know we’ve found value in the Roadrunners of UTSA all year. That’s not changing for me this bowl season either. Plus added value here in that the public is on New Mexico at over a 67% clip. Don’t buy to much into the fact that New Mexico is playing in the New Mexico Bowl. There will be less people at this game than your 5-year-old cousin’s soccer game tomorrow afternoon. The pick: UTSA (+7.5).
Las Vegas Bowl presented by Geico: Houston (-4) vs. San Diego State
Saturday December 17th 2:30 central
Don’t worry friends, it may be a 2:30 kick but Verne and Gary will not be on the call! It’s good to see that the cavemen and gecko came together to sponsor a bowl game though. Especially in Las Vegas, because if there’s anywhere in the world where insurance will come in hand it’s sure as hell Vegas. As for the game; Houston has lost their coach, then they promoted their defensive coordinator to interim coach for the game, then said well actually let’s hire the offensive coordinator as the full time head coach and let him coach this game too. Confusing I know. That can’t bode well for the players in that locker room. I try and fade teams that lost their head coach as much as I can come bowl season and I’ll be doing that here as well. I like the Aztecs with the points and to probably win outright. I’ll try not to lean too heavy on public plays but they’re currently at about 70% backing Houston. That’s big this time of year. The pick: San Diego State (+4). (Get ballsy and take the money line if you’re really feeling it. This is the Las Vegas bowl after all).
R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: Southern Miss (-6) vs. Louisiana Lafayette
Saturday December 17th 8:00pm central
This should be a packed house, I can think of absolutely nothing better to do in New Orleans at 8pm on Saturday night than attend a football game between Louisiana Lafayette and Southern Miss (this is where that sarcasm font would come in real handy, looking at you Bill Gates). Yeah, unless your son is on either of these teams don’t go to this game. Tell your friends or boss or whoever you’re going to this game to support your alma mater and then go literally anywhere else in New Orleans. Southern Miss outgained everyone they played aside from LSU this year. ULL plays in this bowl every damn year, at some point they have to get tired of it. This is that year in my opinion, I like the Golden Eagles big here. The pick: Southern Miss -6.
Raycom Media Camellia Bowl: Appalachian State (+1) vs. Toledo
Saturday December 17th 4:30 central
This bowl game has been going on for quite some time and it STILL blows my mind every year that Montgomery has a bowl game. Montgomery literally might be the worst city I’ve ever been to. If it weren’t for Montgomery people might actually like the state of Alabama (that might be a stretch, but the Gump is bad). App State played here last year and won (their first ever bowl game victory might I add)! Toledo has a pretty good offense, but I think the Mountaineers will be able to slow that down a bit. I think Satterfield is the better coach here, and App State has some big game experience this year in playing Tennessee and Miami (I know they lost both of them, don’t @ me). I think they’ll win outright, and this game is a pick em at most windows, so I’ll roll with the ‘eers here happily. The pick: Appalachain State (+1).
- Autonation Cure Bowl: Arkansas State (+6.5) vs. Central Florida
Saturday December 17th 4:30 central
Here we have another weird one where UCF is playing in their home stadium; we’re not reading too much into that. Blake Bortles isn’t walking through that door (although I can guarantee you the Jaguars wish he was). This is probably my favorite nugget of bowl season: Central Florida went 0-12 last year and barely 365 days later they’re almost a touchdown favorite in a bowl game. PASS. Yeah no thank you, I want no part of that. Arkansas State is a perennial bowl team, and they challenge themselves out of conference throughout the year. They may not win (I personally think they will) but I don’t think the Red Wolves will have a problem keeping it within the number on Saturday. Another shameless DFB Podcast plug; this was my lock of the early bowl game slate. The pick: Arkansas State (+6.5).
Miami Beach Bowl: Central Michigan (+13) vs. Tulsa
Monday December 19th 1:30pm central
Yup, you read that correctly. We’ve got a bowl game during the middle of the work day on Monday. I know ESPN has to protect their precious little Monday Night Football, but c’mon real world folks aren’t off for the Holidays yet. I suspect WatchESPN will be getting a big time ratings boost in offices across the country come Monday afternoon. Tulsa has been pretty good this year, and their offense has scored in bunches. Central Michigan started off hot; including a win at Oklahoma State (look at the record books folks, it counted), but they’ve since fallen off a bit. The public is all over the Golden Hurricanes here at almost 70%. I’m going to side with the team that has a QB who could play on Sundays, beat a near power 5 conference champion, and is catching points. The pick: Central Michigan +13.
Boca Raton Bowl: Memphis (+5) vs. Western Kentucky
Tuesday December 20th 6pm central
Hell yeah! Midweek football at a sensible time, look at you go Boca Raton Bowl! This should low key be a good matchup too. There should be points, and then more points, an extra point or two, and then a few more points on top of that in this game. Western Kentucky lost their head coach to Purdue a few weeks ago, so they’ll be playing with an interim staff. Memphis scores a lot, and beat Houston their last time out. As I’ve stated before and will no doubt state again; I’m not a huge fan of backing teams with an interim staff in bowl season. That applies to the Hilltoppers (I still can't decide if I love or hate that nickname, a never ending war within me). This is Memphis Head Coach Mike Norvell’s first bowl opportunity with the Tigers and I think he’ll make the most of it. The pick: Memphis +5.
San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl: BYU (-9) vs. Wyoming
Wednesday December 21st 8pm central
Ahhh yes, the ever frustrating longest bowl name ever! How in the hell has this name lasted this long? I know the NCAA is absolutely worthless but they should definitely step in here and make them shorten this nonsense. On the field itself we get some more midweek football, but you’ll probably have to stay up late to catch the end of this one. BYU is for some reason a 9 point favorite; Wyoming has flown under the radar a lot this year but I didn’t know they were this under the radar. I really like what Craig Brohl is doing with this Cowboys team, you should know that if you’ve been paying attention this year. I’ve backed the Cowboys a lot this year, and I’m sure as hell backing them again in bowl season. I think they’ll win outright and I’m taking the money line here as well, but I know not all are as brave as I am. The pick: Wyoming +9 (seriously, take the money line).
- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Idaho (+13) vs. Colorado State
Thursday December 22nd 6pm central
We'll wrap up the first set of bowl games with a Thursday night game that's guaranteed to be better than whatever the NFL is trotting out this Thursday (because they’re all awful). Fun fact; Idaho is actually dropping down to FCS after this game. No, this is not soccer and they’re not being relegated. They got the boot from the Sun Belt so they said hell maybe we’re the ones that can beat North Dakota State. Has there ever been a bowl team drop down a level right after their bowl game? I think not. Anyways, Mike Bobo is on the other sidelines for Colorado State and he’s kind of an asshole; when it comes to running the score up at least. If no one in the FBS wants you, then Mike Bobo will probably remind you of why come kickoff. The Rams will win this one, by a lot. The pick: Colorado State -13.
