Welcome my friends; it’s time to talk about the premier College Football Conference in the nation, the ACC!
Just kidding! Despite what Jimbo and Dabo and all the other -bo’s say, the ACC is not the best conference. Their two titles in the last decade came on the arms of two generational quarterbacks and two illegal pick plays (NO CLEMSON, I HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN!!).
In all seriousness though, the ACC is a very strong conference and should be pretty stacked in 2017 as well. Clemson is the reigning champ and will have a pretty good shot at retaining that crown this year.
Let’s take a look at the odds for 2017:
- Florida State +110
Virginia Tech +700
NC State +2500
North Carolina +2500
Georgia Tech +3300
Boston College +20000
Wake Forest +20000
No surprise here that Florida State and Clemson are the two favorites, however I was a bit surprised to see Florida State at almost even money to win the conference.
I think the Noles will be outstanding this year but damn, +110? That’s Alabama territory right there!
Clemson at +300 is actually really good value. Louisville at +600 could be good too if Lamar Jackson can replicate what he did last year (don’t count on it).
Now it’s time to take a look at what we’ve got going on in week one in the ACC. Don’t worry, I’ll get back to the conference champs at the end of this piece (CLIFFHANGER!).
Obviously, the marquee matchup with an ACC team involved is going to be that Florida State/Alabama game, and damnit it better be the best game of all time as much as they’re charging to get in.
The spread on that game is currently Alabama (-7), and I’m kind of torn at that number. I think talent wise FSU is the only team that can compete with the Tide. If this weren’t week one, FSU would probably be my lock of the century, but Saban usually has the Tide ready to roll after 8 months prep for one team.
As of now though, I’ll take the talent of FSU keeping it within a touchdown by the final whistle. It might be a back door cover, but I’ll give you the ‘Noles as of now.
Elsewhere in week one around the ACC we’ve got North Carolina hosting Cal, Louisville headed to Purdue, and NC State traveling to take on South Carolina. Everyone else has the equivalent of the week off.
One note on those games - the North Carolina/Cal game is at 11:20 central, which is like 5:15 in the morning California time. North Carolina is an 11 point favorite in that one, but that’ll still probably be where I lay my money.
Now that we know what’s going on Week one in the ACC, let’s take a look at a team I’m going to back early on and a team to fade early on.
NC State is a team I’m going to be laying money on to start the year. I think they’ll be much improved, plus their head coach Dave Doeren is probably coaching for his job. I’m not willing to say they’re going to set the world on fire this year, but I think they’ll make some noise and at least be competitive in every game they play. I’m banking it takes Vegas a little while to pick up on how good they can be.
Louisville is a team I’m staying the hell away from until further notice. As you’ll see shortly, I’m not as high on Lamar Jackson heading into year three as some are. I think they’ll be on inflated point spreads early on due to having the reigning Heisman winner on their team, and it’ll be an opportunity to cash for us!
Now let’s take a look at some win totals. Like I’ve said several times before, I don’t really love betting these because you have to wait 4 months for a bet to cash that would have the same payout as any game you take on Saturday. Nonetheless, we’re a site for the people and I know some of you fine folks are into this sort of thing so here are a few of my favorites:
Duke Over 5.5 Wins (+120) - I’ll trust David Cutcliffe to at least get his team to a bowl game.
Georgia Tech Under 6.5 Wins (-110) - The option is dead. This will be Paul Johnson’s last year in Atlanta.
Virginia Over 5 Wins (-130) - I think they have 4 for sure wins on their schedule, I’ll give Bronco Mendenhall the benefit of the doubt to get at least one more for a push.
